McBrides' Camp specialises in game walks and walking safaris during your Zambia tour:
3 day stay - early morning walks
Daily morning walks from the camp, returning for a mid-morning brunch. These are modestly paced, investigatory strolls to allow for a close scrutiny of whatever presents itself on a particular morning (a Lion roar, an antelope alarm call, etc), which could include the full range of life forms in the area, birds, insect, mammal and so forth, as well as the ecology of various vegetation types in the area. These walks are fascinating, and your guides have been engaged in such activities for approximately 40 years.
In the afternoons, visitors may choose to go on another walk in a different area, or go for a ride on the river in the famous Double Decker Fish Eagle, an ideal way to enjoy the river and its sights. Or go fishing (Yellow-Belly Bream are the largest Bream, and are famous for their fighting and eating qualities). You may decide to just rest in the camp, from which game and bird (over 300 species) viewing can also be excellent.
5 day stay
For guests who stay for 5 days or more on their Zambia tour, a walk to the fly camp on the beautiful Lunga River is recommended. This walk takes about 6 hours, and is taken in 2 easy 3 hour stages, one in the morning and one in the afternoon with a 3 hour mid-day rest in between.
The leisurely walk is itself a highly fulfilling experience, during which it is not unusual to see Lion, Buffalo, and Elephant, as well as numerous other species the area offers. Bird sightings are frequently spectacular.
One or 2 nights of your Zambia tour are spent camping in the area and you will be very well looked after by the guides / attendants. You will enjoy what is almost a total wilderness area in terms of lack of human interference, a wilderness that can be measured by the fact that Hippo, on cool days, often graze in the daytime, which they only do in areas of near zero human interference. On day 4, the walk back to the main camp is commenced, or perhaps visitors may opt to ride back by boat.
Wildlife that you can see include Aardvark, Roan Antelope, Sable, Squirrel, Buffalo, Bushbaby, LesserBushbaby, Thick- tailed Warthog, Bush pig, Civet, Duiker, Honey Badger, Eland, Elephant, Genet, Greater Kudu, Bush Buck, Hare, Scrub, Hartebeest, Lichtenstein's Duiker, common Jackal, Side - striped Leopard, Lion, Grysbok, Sharpe's Mongoose, Slender Mongoose, White- tailed Monkey, Velvet Mouse, Striped Otter, Spotted- backed Mongoose, Banded Puku, Reedbuck, Hippo, Hyena, Spotted Waterbuck, Zebra, Pangolin and Porcupine.
Please bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sun tan cream, toiletries / medications, natural colored clothes for walks, mosquito and tsetse fly repellant and malaria prophylactics, binoculars, a torch / flashlight, a jacket for evenings round the fire, food and drinks as required, a camera and lots of film.
The area abounds in bird life (over 300 species), like various species of Cormorants and other water birds, Heron, Ross's Lourie, Schalow's Lourie, Pel's Fishing Owl, Racket-tailed Roller, Pennant-winged Nightjar, Heuglin's Robin, Openbill Stork, African Skimmer, different species of pigeons, Doves, Honeyguides, Eagles and other kinds of birds of prey, Francolins, Guinea Fowl, Ducks and Geese, Jacanas, Darters, Kingfishers, Trumpeter Hornbill and other Hornbills, Dikkops, Plovers, Parrots, African Finfoot, Woodpeckers, Barbets, Sunbirds and others too numerous to mention.
