This 5000 square kilometre game park in the far south west has been completely undeveloped and rarely visited until recently. The park is home to over 3000 Elephants; the area forms an important link in the migratory route of Elephants from the bordering national parks of Botswana and Namibia.

Several antelope species are present, but quite shy - mostly Puku, Impala, Roan, Sable, Zebra and Kudu. Other unusual antelope found include Oribi, Red Lechwe, Tsessebe, Steenbok and Duiker. Jackal, Cheetah, Wild Cat, Wild Dog as well as Lion and Hyena are the predators of the area.

The magnificent riverine forest is home to over 450 of Zambia's 740 documented bird species, making Mutemwa a birdwatcher's paradise. The lodge's fleet of leisure boats are designed to allow individuals and small groups to quietly cruise the river and tributaries to view birds in their natural habitat.

Your day at this Zambia game lodge is measured not by clocks but by the local birdlife. The vocal White-Browed Robin-Chat might wake you at first light, followed by Senegal and Coppery-tailed Coucals calling from the reeds. Over breakfast, Trumpeter Hornbills cry like babies and from the breakfast table you can watch the Schalow's Turaco's hop about the treetops.

In the late afternoon, the African Finfoot swim by your deck, and you'll hear the Fish Eagle's call echoing across the Zambezi. Late in the evening, the calls of the Night Jars and Pels Fishing Owl echo through the trees, and the comforting hoot of the Wood Owls closes your day.

The Zambia game lodge is also an ideal place to observe and enjoy a variety of wildlife, which is seen in and around the river. Trails and walks are even more interesting when one of the experienced guides provides facts and stories about local flora and fauna. Elephants and Hippos are regularly seen around the Lodge, wallowing in the river, or grazing on the banks.

The river flowing past the lodge is generally shallow and broken by many forested islands and rapids. This ensures challenging fishing for both spin and fly anglers. Mutemwa Lodge is the ideal holiday for the enthusiastic fisherman - both amateur or professional.

The renowned Zambezi Tiger Fish is common to these waters, and tasty bream make good eating. In the spirit of conservation, the fish guests catch are tagged and returned to the river. Mutemwa has a flyfishing expert - Devan van der Merwe who is available to rig, fix, tie flies and give advice.
